Idul Adha dan Makna Berkorban

Idul Adha adalah hari raya yang selalu kita peringati setiap tahunnya. Yaitu hari dimana kita diperingatkan kembali peristiwa pengorbanan 4000 atau 4500 tahun silam. Idul Adha atau lebih dikenal dengan Idul Kurban, mengingatkan kepada kita bagaimana proses perjuangan yang dilakukan oleh Nabi Ibrahim as. Nabi Ibrahim diutus oleh Allah untuk menyembelih anak satu-satu nya yang sudah lama diimpikannya. Perintah Allah ini menjadikan nabi Ibrahim berada diposisi yang super galau untuk menentukan pilihan diantara keinginan pribadinya untuk mempertahankan anaknya dan tuntutan perintah Allah. Namun, karena ketaqwaan Nabi Ibrahim yang begitu tinggi, maka Nabi Ibrahim lebih memilih imannya kepada Allah daripada dunia (anaknya). Walaupun pada akhirnya Allah mengganti Nabi Ismail dengan seekor hewan kurban. Dari sini dapat kita ambil beberapa pelajaran berharga diantaranya adalah “makna berkorban”. Makna berkorban adalah memberikan sesuatu dari miliknya sendiri dengan didasarai tanpa pamrih. Allah berfirman
“Kamu sekali-kali tidak sampai kepada kebajikan (yang sempurna), sebelum kamu menafkahkan sebagian harta yang kamu cintai. Dan apa saja yang kamu nafkahkan maka sesungguhnya Allah mengetahui.” (QS. Ali ‘Imran : 92). Peristiwa di atas adalah menjadi titik awal dianjurkannya perintah untuk berkurban bagi umat Islam. Sebenarnya islam telah mengajarkan berkorban sejak dahulu malalui peristiwa Qobil dan Habil yang diperintahkan untuk memberikan persembahan terbaiknya untuk Allah. Dari peristiwa-peristiwa tersebut dapat diambil garis bahwa manusia berkorban untuk mandapatkan kemuliaan di sisi-Nya. Tidak ada satu pun kemuliaan di dunia ini yang didapatkan dengan cara yang mudah, semuanya membutuhkan pengorbanan ; kesabaran, keikhlasan, waktu, tenaga dan sebagainya. Kembali lagi Idul Adha menjadi momentum yang baik untuk mengingatkan manusia untuk berkorban untuk membangun pola hidup yang lebih agamis moralis.
Peristiwa Idul Adha tidak hanya menceritakan tentang pengorbanan Nabi Ibrahim dan Nabi Ismail, namun juga pengorbanan Siti Hajar berlari-lari dari bukit Shafa ke bukit Marwa demi mendapatkan air untuk buah hatinya. Setelah melihat perjuangan seorang ibu tersebut, akhirnya Allah mengabulkan doa Siti Hajar dengan memunculkan air zam-zam yang kita kenal sampai sekarang khasiatnya. Dari peristiwa ini pula dapat dipetik hikmah yang dirangkum dalam kalimat “ Man Jadda Wa Jadda”, barang siapa bersungguh-sungguh
pasti akan mandapatkan hasil. Permintaan seorang kepada Allah tidak akan terwujud tanpa berbanding lurus dengan usaha yang dilakukannya. Seorang tidak akan mendapatkan uang tanpa dia bekerja. Banyak sekali bukti bahwa kemuliaan dan kebaikan tidak akan didapat tanpa melalui sebuah pengorbanan. Seorang wanita tidak akan merasakan bahagianya menjadi seorang ibu, tanpa merasakan sakitnya terlebih dahulu sebuah persalinan. Negara kita tidak akan pernah merdeka tanpa adanya perjuangan rela mati oleh para pahlawan kita. Seorang siswa tidak akan mendapat nilai bagus, tanpa belajar semalaman sebelum ujian. Selanjutnya, mari kita renungkan pada diri kita, sudah kah kita berkorban? Untuk kita sendiri dan orang disekita kita. Wa allahu a’lam [arradhwa]

Seorang yang dulunya pernah bersemedi lama untuk menghatamkan alquran di ujung negri garam, sumenep, prenduan al amien ini telah  berhasil memyuguhkan karya yang cukup apik untuk dibahas. Banyak diantara kita khusunya para mahasiswa  yang mungkin baru menyadari tentang bergunung-gununngnya faedah dan  keisstimewaan menghafal alquran. Sehingga timbul I’tikad untuk menghafal sambil kuliah. Namun disisi lain berbagai kegiatan dalam dunia perkuliahan menuntut banyak waktu kita, sehingga terasa sangat sulit untuk membagi waktu,,walau terkadang hanya sekedar deres atau murojaah Al-quran. Sehingga timbullah pertanyaan “mungkin gak sih ngafalin Al-quran saat kuliah?”. Pertanyaan diatas talah dijawab dalam buku ini dengan mengutip ayat Al-quran surat al qomar : 22 “Dan sesungguhnya telah kami mudahkan Al-quran untuk pelajaran, maka adakah orang yang mengambil pelajaran?”. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa Allah telah menjamin bahwa Al-quran telah dmudahkan untuk manusia sebagai pelajaran, termasuk dalam menghafalnya. Ayat yang serupa bahkan diulang sampai tiga kali dalam surat yang sama. Masing-masing terdapat pada ayat 17,32 dan 40. Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1  Background of the choosing the Subject

.....................................................................................                                    “The Gift of the Magi” is a short story, one of several hundred written by O. Henry between 1903 and 1910. It was published in a New York City newspaper in 1905 and in a collection, The Four Million, in 1906. O. Henry  is one of the famous and well known writer or author at that era. Most of his writing is famous of great writing as well. After his release from prison in 1901, he moved to New York, which is the setting for many of his stories. He is the author of over 250 stories and is most famous for his use of surprise or 'twist' endings. Notice the twists and surprises in the endings to "The Last Leaf", "The Green Door", and perhaps his most famous story, "The Gift of the Magi". By those reason, this paper provided to recover the plot of “the gift of the magi”

1.2  Objective and Scope of the Study

The main objective of this analysis is recovering the one of intrinsic points, that is plot, in the short story the gift of the magi by O. Henry . This purpose analysis is to excavate all information that has relation with the plot of story deeply. Then, we will dig out how the author provides his story with his own character plot. That is suspense.

1.3  Statement of the Problem

Based on the previous background of the selecting the short story, the statement of the problem can be concluded as how O.Henry provide the plot in his short story “the gift of the magi”?

    1.4 Theoretical Approach 

Structuralism is a method of analyzing phenomena, as in anthropology, linguistics, psychology, or literature, chiefly characterized by contrasting the elemental structures of the phenomena in a system of binary opposition. Structuralism is an intellectual movement which bases it analysis on the reduction of materials into models referred to as structures. It is fundamental to structuralism that it be understood that these structures are not concrete manifestations of reality; but cognitive models of reality. Lévi-Strauss stresses that all cultures and not only scholars understand the universe around them through such models, and that humankind comprehends his world on the basis of these mental structures (Mark Glazer.1994).

Chapter 2

DISCUSSION

Most good stories start with: the initial situation or expository, conflict, raising action, climax, suspense, falling action, and conclusion. In this story, we can find all of those elements.

2.1 Expository

The story beginning with problem, Della the major character had a problem. She wanted to buy her husband well preset in Christmas day. Unfortunately, her money was not much enough.  Della only has $1.87 to buy a Christmas present, and it's Christmas Eve. She and her husband are poor. Nevertheless, as human being, they also want to celebrate well their Christmas. Della loved her husband much. Then, Della thought more how to get money to buy her husband perfect Christmas present. In fact, she just has her long hair. At that time when long hair was the mascot of the women life. Someone who has long hair is proud of her life. Whether she was herself or her husband.

2.2 Conflict

Della sold her hair. The conflict is supposedly when Della found the solution of her problem. She decides to sell her hair. This is the conflict as the solution of the fist problem. Therefore, we can conclude that the solution of the first problem open the next problem. Because when Della sold her hair. She would lose her mascot which be prouded of herself and her husband. Then, there was a new problem:  would Jim (Della husband) be pleased by Della's action and appreciate her gift, or would he be angry with her for cutting off the hair he loved so much?

2.3 Raising Action

Jim was shocked with Della appearance with no long hair. When jim come back from his job, he seemed not well. He stared Della like wanted to ask where is your hair, honey? Yet, he did not look like he is angry. Yeah, because he also loved his wife much. Directly, Della gave the explanation what had happened with her hair. She told that she sold her hair to buy something special for her lovely husband. She also tried to make the situation calmly by telling that her hair will grow up fast.

2.4 Climax

When Jim give his present to Della. We can know the reason why Jim was so shocked when knowing his hair wife had cut off. The present is comb. Then the sweetest moment was when Jim showed that he was not angry and would assure her that he would love her wife whatever she looked like. May be, most reader will predict that Jim will angry. In other hand that was not. We has known that Jim’s family was poor, so where Jim got the money to buy the expensive comb to his wife? We may be able to guess what happens next. Then this part called as foreshadowing element of the plot.

2.5 Suspense

Then, we are in suspense element which the author famous of this element. It was time to know how Jim reacted to Della’s present. And we also still questioning where Jim got the money? Della gives Jim the watch chain.

2.6 Falling Action

After knowing the Della present. Jim smiled calmly. Then, Della asked the Jim’s watch which the most valuable thing that he had, Jim could give. He sold his watch to buy Della her combs. Therefore, both the presents were useless. Then, no much to do, except eating chop crops.

2.7 Conclusion

In the final paragraph, they keep their present useless. Then, they also think that they were just too nice if just to present. They are the wisest givers of all. It was about sacrifice and true love.

Then, to create the good story we also need suspense to invite the reader enter in the story. So that, the reader will keep reading the story.

Chapter 3

CONCLUSION

                       By those, we know that the good story is when the author can provide the story that can keep the reader reading the story. Then, to make the reader keep reading, we can use suspense or surprise that reader guess is not proved. Then, the author should think the general guessing, so the author can provide the different story.

One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one's cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty- seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas.

There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. Which instigates the moral reflection that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating.

While the mistress of the home is gradually subsiding from the first stage to the second, take a look at the home. A furnished flat at $8 per week. It did not exactly beggar description, but it certainly had that word on the lookout for the mendicancy squad.

In the vestibule below was a letter-box into which no letter would go, and an electric button from which no mortal finger could coax a ring. Also appertaining thereunto was a card bearing the name "Mr. James Dillingham Young."

The "Dillingham" had been flung to the breeze during a former period of prosperity when its possessor was being paid $30 per week. Now, when the income was shrunk to $20, though, they were thinking seriously of contracting to a modest and unassuming D. But whenever Mr. James Dillingham Young came home and reached his flat above he was called "Jim" and greatly hugged by Mrs. James Dillingham Young, already introduced to you as Della. Which is all very good.

Della finished her cry and attended to her cheeks with the powder rag. She stood by the window and looked out dully at a gray cat walking a gray fence in a gray backyard. Tomorrow would be Christmas Day, and she had only $1.87 with which to buy Jim a present. She had been saving every penny she could for months, with this result. Twenty dollars a week doesn't go far. Expenses had been greater than she had calculated. They always are. Only $1.87 to buy a present for Jim. Her Jim. Many a happy hour she had spent planning for something nice for him. Something fine and rare and sterling--something just a little bit near to being worthy of the honor of being owned by Jim.

There was a pier-glass between the windows of the room. Perhaps you have seen a pier-glass in an $8 flat. A very thin and very agile person may, by observing his reflection in a rapid sequence of longitudinal strips, obtain a fairly accurate conception of his looks. Della, being slender, had mastered the art.

Suddenly she whirled from the window and stood before the glass. her eyes were shining brilliantly, but her face had lost its color within twenty seconds. Rapidly she pulled down her hair and let it fall to its full length.

Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim's gold watch that had been his father's and his grandfather's. The other was Della's hair. Had the queen of Sheba lived in the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair hang out the window some day to dry just to depreciate Her Majesty's jewels and gifts. Had King Solomon been the janitor, with all his treasures piled up in the basement, Jim would have pulled out his watch every time he passed, just to see him pluck at his beard from envy.

So now Della's beautiful hair fell about her rippling and shining like a cascade of brown waters. It reached below her knee and made itself almost a garment for her. And then she did it up again nervously and quickly. Once she faltered for a minute and stood still while a tear or two splashed on the worn red carpet.

On went her old brown jacket; on went her old brown hat. With a whirl of skirts and with the brilliant sparkle still in her eyes, she fluttered out the door and down the stairs to the street.

Where she stopped the sign read: "Mne. Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds." One flight up Della ran, and collected herself, panting. Madame, large, too white, chilly, hardly looked the "Sofronie."

"Will you buy my hair?" asked Della.

"I buy hair," said Madame. "Take yer hat off and let's have a sight at the looks of it."

Down rippled the brown cascade.

"Twenty dollars," said Madame, lifting the mass with a practised hand.

"Give it to me quick," said Della.

Oh, and the next two hours tripped by on rosy wings. Forget the hashed metaphor. She was ransacking the stores for Jim's present.

She found it at last. It surely had been made for Jim and no one else. There was no other like it in any of the stores, and she had turned all of them inside out. It was a platinum fob chain simple and chaste in design, properly proclaiming its value by substance alone and not by meretricious ornamentation--as all good things should do. It was even worthy of The Watch. As soon as she saw it she knew that it must be Jim's. It was like him. Quietness and value--the description applied to both. Twenty-one dollars they took from her for it, and she hurried home with the 87 cents. With that chain on his watch Jim might be properly anxious about the time in any company. Grand as the watch was, he sometimes looked at it on the sly on account of the old leather strap that he used in place of a chain.

When Della reached home her intoxication gave way a little to prudence and reason. She got out her curling irons and lighted the gas and went to work repairing the ravages made by generosity added to love. Which is always a tremendous task, dear friends--a mammoth task.

Within forty minutes her head was covered with tiny, close-lying curls that made her look wonderfully like a truant schoolboy. She looked at her reflection in the mirror long, carefully, and critically.

"If Jim doesn't kill me," she said to herself, "before he takes a second look at me, he'll say I look like a Coney Island chorus girl. But what could I do--oh! what could I do with a dollar and eighty- seven cents?"

At 7 o'clock the coffee was made and the frying-pan was on the back of the stove hot and ready to cook the chops.

Jim was never late. Della doubled the fob chain in her hand and sat on the corner of the table near the door that he always entered. Then she heard his step on the stair away down on the first flight, and she turned white for just a moment. She had a habit for saying little silent prayer about the simplest everyday things, and now she whispered: "Please God, make him think I am still pretty."

The door opened and Jim stepped in and closed it. He looked thin and very serious. Poor fellow, he was only twenty-two--and to be burdened with a family! He needed a new overcoat and he was without gloves.

Jim stopped inside the door, as immovable as a setter at the scent of quail. His eyes were fixed upon Della, and there was an expression in them that she could not read, and it terrified her. It was not anger, nor surprise, nor disapproval, nor horror, nor any of the sentiments that she had been prepared for. He simply stared at her fixedly with that peculiar expression on his face.

Della wriggled off the table and went for him.

"Jim, darling," she cried, "don't look at me that way. I had my hair cut off and sold because I couldn't have lived through Christmas without giving you a present. It'll grow out again--you won't mind, will you? I just had to do it. My hair grows awfully fast. Say `Merry Christmas!' Jim, and let's be happy. You don't know what a nice-- what a beautiful, nice gift I've got for you."

"You've cut off your hair?" asked Jim, laboriously, as if he had not arrived at that patent fact yet even after the hardest mental labor.

"Cut it off and sold it," said Della. "Don't you like me just as well, anyhow? I'm me without my hair, ain't I?"

Jim looked about the room curiously.

"You say your hair is gone?" he said, with an air almost of idiocy.

"You needn't look for it," said Della. "It's sold, I tell you--sold and gone, too. It's Christmas Eve, boy. Be good to me, for it went for you. Maybe the hairs of my head were numbered," she went on with sudden serious sweetness, "but nobody could ever count my love for you. Shall I put the chops on, Jim?"

Out of his trance Jim seemed quickly to wake. He enfolded his Della. For ten seconds let us regard with discreet scrutiny some inconsequential object in the other direction. Eight dollars a week or a million a year--what is the difference? A mathematician or a wit would give you the wrong answer. The magi brought valuable gifts, but that was not among them. This dark assertion will be illuminated later on.

Jim drew a package from his overcoat pocket and threw it upon the table.

"Don't make any mistake, Dell," he said, "about me. I don't think there's anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that could make me like my girl any less. But if you'll unwrap that package you may see why you had me going a while at first."

White fingers and nimble tore at the string and paper. And then an ecstatic scream of joy; and then, alas! a quick feminine change to hysterical tears and wails, necessitating the immediate employment of all the comforting powers of the lord of the flat.

For there lay The Combs--the set of combs, side and back, that Della had worshipped long in a Broadway window. Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell, with jewelled rims--just the shade to wear in the beautiful vanished hair. They were expensive combs, she knew, and her heart had simply craved and yearned over them without the least hope of possession. And now, they were hers, but the tresses that should have adorned the coveted adornments were gone.

But she hugged them to her bosom, and at length she was able to look up with dim eyes and a smile and say: "My hair grows so fast, Jim!"

And them Della leaped up like a little singed cat and cried, "Oh, oh!"

Jim had not yet seen his beautiful present. She held it out to him eagerly upon her open palm. The dull precious metal seemed to flash with a reflection of her bright and ardent spirit.

"Isn't it a dandy, Jim? I hunted all over town to find it. You'll have to look at the time a hundred times a day now. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it."

Instead of obeying, Jim tumbled down on the couch and put his hands under the back of his head and smiled.

"Dell," said he, "let's put our Christmas presents away and keep 'em a while. They're too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on."

The magi, as you know, were wise men--wonderfully wise men--who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication. And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. O all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi.

 Based on the poem biography who was active in black racial environment, this poem might be she indicated to someone who are suffering because of something especially about her/his environment. She has a food that she liked much or that was really important for her/him but unfortunately, she could not eat them. As the fact about discrimination for black people especially in US where the poet life, it is also possible if this poet told about the black people life, because they got a strong discrimination between them and white people. At that time just the white people could do everything and got the whole of a human right, but the black people not. The black people has their wealth, creativity, thinking and others but unfortunately because of brother war, they got a different treatment from the government, they could use all theirs. Their  lives was in unclearly, like a “puny light” that stated between light and dark, it was not light but not really dark also. Then their lives were in hard suffering because of that discrimination. They did not when that condition would be over. They just had to wait. They believe the time would answer it. In other hand, though the life condition is unfriendly with them, they still keep hoping that someday next, they can life normally, using their completely human right.

The Advantages of Joining Organization

The best age that has highest potential is around 17-22 years old. In that age, the teenagers express themselves by doing anything they want or something that interest their curiosities, For instance: joining organization, making experiment to get something new or improving their skills such as singing, dancing, writing, painting and so on. Then, of all the activities, joining organization gives the most significant influence in their lives. By means of joining organization, we are able to escalate association with other societies, to get place discussion easily and to train a leadership. Thus, joining organization gives many advantages.

As human being, we cannot life alone; we need someone else to communicate, such as for sharing, asking help or so forth. In an organization, we will meet many people; it means we will get many new friends that will not we get if we do not join organization. Next, if we meet many people, we are forced to face multi characters. For example, to avoid uproar, we will force ourselves to be more patient when we face an arrogant or selfish person. That is the challenge. Then, we will learn how interact with multi characters automatically. Gradually our ability in social intercourse communicating will be better. Finally, we will be easy to get social networking, then; our friends will be there wherever we are.

Besides having various and many friends, joining an organization gives us a chance to get a place discussion or to share a problem, because we have many friends who will listen and help us. Different head is also different thinking. Our brains are limited, so we need other helps to sharp them. By sharing a problem with other, it will help us to build a better way of thinking gradually. In addition, we will get new knowledge from other friends by discussing or sharing a case. I have proved that, when I had not yet joined an organization, I was so confused as soon as I got a problem or difficulties with my study or society.  I just had several friends which some of them I do not really know their background. So, I was afraid to ask or discuss something deeply. Then, after joining organization, I can get the solution easily, because I have had friends that I can share or discuss a problem deeply with them.

Not only having many friends and getting place discussion, but joining an organization also can train us a leadership. At least, we can learn how to lead ourselves in managing time. We cannot avoid the fact when we have joined an organization, we will need more time to make a relationship with another members and to join programs of the organization itself. So, we are forced to be smart in managing time, then we will get many advantages.

            In brief, joining an organization will give us many benefits, especially for teenagers who have good potential when they have a lot of energy and big curiosity. By joining an organization, we can build new networking, having many friends discussion and learning how to be leader, at least for ourselves. In other hand, joining an organization also can be a problem for us, if we cannot manage our time and cannot control an emotion, those will become a big problem. Besides, we will get many enemies; we also will get a bad daily activity, because we do not have enough time to thing. We just do something in front of us without considering how many benefits we will get. Then, joining an organization will be something useless for us. In taking the advantages from joining an organization, it depends on our selves. How we manage our time and emotion.

Standard of living by Dorothy parker told about the live of two girls, Annabel and midge. In the first paragraph, by good describing, the author introduced the character inside, Annabel and midge, and then we call it as an expository. Those two girls were friend from the day that midge had found a job as stenographer with the same firm as Annabel employed. Then, one day Annabel had invented a new game. Actually, she did not it just resented an old game. Based on Annabel version the game was you must suppose that there was somebody dies and gives you a million dollars before dying, yet you have something to do, you have to spend all your money. Then, by the role of element of plot, we can call this part as raising action that would lead us to the climax. After introducing the game to her best friend, midge, they did the game. There were little long series here, when this couple friend has different argument, what the first thing they would do. Finally, they got an agreement what they would do first, they would get a mink coat, although, when they passed the fifth avenue they changed their mind, they took it back, they would get a string of pearls based on midge suggestion. This part is the climax of the story, because this part is the most intense moment. Furthermore, for failing action is when Annabel and midge went out from the shop disappointedly, because hearing the prize of a string of pearls, which is two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. After that, they felt embarrassing as if a disdains were in their faces. This part when Annabel and midge arranged their felling after leaving the shop to be normal is the failing action. There is no resolution here, because the reader can guess what the next story is. By the reason that this story is possible happened in the real life, we could call this as plausibility. Then, the author also gave the guideline before the series, so, it includes as foreshadowing.  There were some basic conflicts; they are Person vs. Person, Person vs. society, Person vs. fate and Person vs. self.

The author used both Showing indirect and telling direct as the Method of characterization. The characters in this story are Annabel, she is arrogant , glamour and beautiful. We can see in the First paragraph : “ Annabel and midge came out of the tea room with the arrogant low gait”, “ they had lunched as was their want “, the 16^th paragraph : “ they tendered thanks, icily, ………… but the girls wore expressions of bitter disdain, as if they stood in a sty, “ Annabel an midge said together, and in like freezing accent”, then, in the 18^th paragraph : “ suddenly midge straightened  her back, flung her head high, and spoke, clear and strong. Then, to show that she is also Glamour, let’s see the 4^th paragraph : “ they painted their lips and their nails, they darkened their lashes and lightened their hair………”. For Midge, Annabel’s comrades, she also had the characteristics same with Annabel. She is arrogant, glamour and beautiful, because the author said (in the 4^th paragraph) they looked alike in shapes, bodies and movement but not for their features. Both are protagonist and major character, because they are not only mean character, but also take significant role in the story. Then, they have flat or static character that their characteristics never changed.

There were some characters more to support and help the story running well. We call it minor character. One of them is Sylvia, their friend in the office, Sylvia is impolite and unfriendly. We can see when Annabel offered to play game to Sylvia. Sylvia’s answer showed that she was not fun with Annabel. The next characters are Doorman who is polite and clerk that is polite, patient and immaculate, it was shown by their acts in giving greeting while bowing. In addition, Dorothy parker also used telling indirect in showing the characterization. It can be proved in 16^th paragraph : by author => “ a slim, immaculate clerk come to them and bowed” in showing the characteristic of clerk. All of the minor or figurant characters are flat or static character.

How about the point of view?. The author used third person point of view. Who is omniscient or who knew the entire story. She described all the series in the story prettily. In addition, it is also caused that there was no pronoun “I” that is as the mark of the first person point of view. Therefore, Dorothy parker used the third point of view.

There are some elements of setting. The first is the actual geographic location, in this story the author describe the Fith Avenue was in the hot and glaring that made people drooped and shambled (in 14^th paragraph). Then, the occupation of the character; for Annabel and midge is stenographer and someone who was as clerk in the shop. This story was happened in September on summer. Then, the places were in tearoom, their office, Fifth Avenue and the shop.

Dorothy parker provided a satire in this story. Two girls wanted to life as rich people by what they wanted to eat or how their style and adornment, In fact, they were not. They got their salaries just around 16$ - 18.50 $ a week. Moreover, they had to use a half of their salary to support the necessary of their family, because they still lived at home. It meant that they were not rich. Then, to solve this, they created a game that they had to suppose there would be someone leaving a million dollar for them before he dies. Next, they had to spend all the money. Therefore, they could life as a rich people. Without realizing, sometime people use this act in our daily, people support their falsehood, just to make calm their selves, though that will not be longer anymore. Finally, they also have to receive the fact disappointedly. In short, Dorothy parker invited us to learn to face the world, the fact, the fate bravely, without pretending, without playing-act and without fictive.
